SARA ROSS

Artist's CV

I am and always have been drawn to and intrigued by the natural world. Form, patterns, colours, and textures within nature, as well as what we can and what we cannot see are a constant inspiration within my work.

I am very much aware of the fragility of our landscape and our fragile relationship with the natural world as humans. I have recently been drawing inspiration from the beautiful, rich, and rugged Cornish terrain where weather and time have made an imprint on the landscape and where I have been bringing up my young family for the last eight years. I mostly work in a sculptural form with Cornish stoneware clays but often cast my work in a variety of materials to suit each individual piece. The art of the making process is also important to me. I let me subconscious mind also play a role in how a piece may develop, allowing the clay to breathe and grow alongside both the subconscious and conscious mind at work. I like to experiment and mix up my own glazes and slips, and use a variety of metal oxides, organic matter and sometimes crushed natural minerals and crystals within my work.

I spent many years in London working in the film industry as a sculptor where the figure and animal sculpture were prevalent within my work. I carry this with me as I go forward, often returning to and connecting to the figure as a source of inspiration. Creating a sense of movement and feeling of life has always been a focus within my work.
