The subject matter for my paintings varies from the purely intuitive and abstract to images drawn
from the landscape and still lives. Painting works best for me in that strange and intangible interval
of action between conscious thought and reflection. Relaxing conscious control in order to release
unconscious movements. A gestural mark that says as much as possible with the most simplicity is
the aim. Colour, shape and light also matter. I explore the fluid movement and relationships of
colour, piling up and breaking like a wave, transparencies and opacities of paint like the depths and
surfaces of water, rough textures of earth and granite, and the forces of the rectangle like ancient
rocks, trees and towers braced against the wind.
