GABRIELLE HAWKES

In 2013 I moved to St Columb Major from St Just near Lands End, where I lived for 30 years. The landscape of mid-Cornwall is very different from the wild and windswept coast near Cape Cornwall. There is a different kind of magic here that I tap into in my work. Some of it is very close at hand in that I often use my garden and my animals as sources of inspiration.

Sometimes in my paintings I am a story-teller – the stories that my paintings tell you may be entirely different from those that I hear when I am painting- that’s fine, but I want my paintings to speak to you, sometimes to make you smile, sometimes to disturb and to move you so that you see things differently.

Artist's CV

I moved to Cornwall in 1982 with my young daughter.

Mainly self-taught as an artist, I found myself inspired by the Cornish landscape, focusing initially on screen-printing and wood-engraving, a skill learned at Penzance School of Art classes.

A member of St Ives Society of artists for many  years, I contribute regularly to members and non-members shows. I work mainly in a studio in my garden, surrounded by trees and garden wildlife with occasional visits from my cat.
