ADRIENNE PEVERALL

Adrienne Peverall is a Cornwall-based artist and printmaker whose work is inspired by her love of nature and the animals roaming freely on the moorland where she lives.

Since the early 1990s Adrienne has produced many monoprints etchings and paintings; the almost abstract monoprints portray rich intuitive colour relationships whilst the etchings contain combinations of strong draughtmanship and tonal contrasts. There is also nearly always an element of humour present in her wildlife observations.

The Porthmeor Print Workshop across the road from the Mariners Gallery became a regular working studio for Adrienne and many other artist-printmakers, some of whom exhibit at the Mariners Gallery and Penwith Gallery.

This long association with the art scene in St Ives coincides with Adrienne’s membership of the St Ives Society, as a member of the committee and as a Director and Hon. Secretary.

The Penwith landscape on the north coast is famous for dramatic scenery and sea mists! Large areas of moorland, sometimes covered in heather and gorse, are great for spotting wildlife, and exploring Iron Age Quoits and villages. Wind-sculpted Hawthorns dot the hedgerows surrounding the fields. Artists and walkers scramble over stiles. It is where we live now after 20 years in Hampshire. Life changing events encouraged us to move to the Cornwall we knew from our 1970s holidays.

We moved to a hamlet on Penwith moors in 1988. The Art and Craft classes in Penzance were famous for being tutored by professional contemporary artists. I joined a thriving Printmaking class whose tutor, Sheila Oliner, was an internationally known artist/printmaker. We students learnt to etch on copper plates and used the complete kit necessary to achieve a fine art print! The class of artist/printmakers grouped together and became known as the Penwith Printmakers.

We exhibited in many galleries in Penzance, including Penlee Museum, and in St.Ives we exhibited annually in the Mariners Gallery, home of the St Ives Society. The Ten Penwith Printmakers published a book illustrating their work and most of the group became members of the St Ives Society of Artists

I worked at the Porthmeor Print Workshop across the road from the Mariners Gallery while exhibiting my etchings and monoprints with the St Ives Society’s members. The next 24 years witnessed our struggles to maintain the iconic building and I became involved with the many events we organised to acquire funding. The Mariners Gallery now has a new roof and is a well-known destination in the centre of Downalong, a buzzing area where artists and galleries abound!
