The theme of our show is ‘Remains’. The subject has come out of our collective interest in what is left after other parts have been removed – traces or vestiges; this might be in terms of what is left in the archaeological record.
We look to the remains of the geological, the biological, or even the cultural. Remains by nature occupy a new and transformed state. As with fossils and bones, relics and ruins, they can take strange, transitioned forms. Compressed, multilayered and perhaps just a poignant sole imprint that calls up some long-gone journey or embodiment. Changed in both form and function, the animated becomes stilled to a remaindered object; recontextualised and rematerialised.
As remnants of what has gone before, remains are capable of provoking a mind-blowing sense of deep time or a sober declaration of the fragile and material nature of the human body. The show has emerged out of those invisible processes that lie outside human time, and of which we are all part.
We hope to have scratched into stratified time layers to unearth some arresting imagery across a range of different media.
