HAAR by Heather McAlpine in the Crypt Gallery

Haar is a Scottish word used to describe a coastal sea mist — something that rolls in from the horizon, softening edges and shifting what we see. While my paintings are made here in Cornwall, there is a quiet connection to Scotland in this idea — a shared coastline, atmosphere, and relationship with the sea.

This new body of work continues my exploration of the ocean through both immersion in the sea and immersion in the painting process itself. Each piece develops through layers, movement, and intuition — echoing the changing light, energy, and unpredictability of the coast.

The exhibition will include a collection of new large-scale canvases alongside smaller works & works on paper, all rooted in this ongoing dialogue between sea and studio.
