SUMMARY:From Cornwall with Love in the Crypt Gallery
DESCRIPTION:To Cornwall with love…\nDecember 6th – 12th \nIs an exhibition of paintings that acts as a\nvisual love letter from and to Cornwall. \nI recognise that many of us have a deep\nconnection\, and we collectively enjoy and\nshare our love\, for Cornwall- its land\, coast\nand the warmth of its people. The memories\nand stories shared enable us to feel that we\nbelong and we carry and hold other’s\nmemories too. \nOften\, a painting can hold a moment- an\nemotion\, a feeling of a day\, the weather\, the\nlight\, the feeling of the sea\, the smell of the\nsalt\, the kindness of our valley gardens and\ndaily walks past those trees we know.\nI paint on site and then in reflection back in\nmy studio in Falmouth and my hope that\nsome of the energy and feeling of these\nmoments are captured in paint –where we\nare transported back to our ‘place’ (that \ncoast\, field or garden) and to the emotion of\nbeing there. \nI aim to acknowledge the comfort of places\none knows-the reverie of being completely\nimmersed in the Cornish landscape.\nMy work therefor embodies a deeply rooted\nconnection with ‘place’-the spirit of place-and\nexplores the connectivity of collective\nmemory through sharing art with others that\nrelate to these places too. \nThe viewer is invited to walk with me around\nour coast\, and the land that skirts the sea.\nThese places\, captured in paint\, are just a\nsnap shot in time\, as each day brings new\nexperiences\, sensation and feelings and the\npotential for new memories\, more connection\nand understanding of the depth of connection\nwe have. ‘ Cornwall with love’\, invites us to\ncherish this connection and look after it. We\nare custodians of Cornwall and the memories\nit gives us and I celebrate this through paint. \nI hope you enjoy. Love\, Victoria

DESCRIPTION:The Owrek Collective are a group of artists that met during their degree course at Cornwall College. The friendships and synergy that evolved during their studies led to the formation and collaboration of this group. Their work varies in style and choice of media which creates a diverse and exciting display. \n  \nThis exhibition at The Crypt Gallery showcases work inspired by the Cornish coastline\, folklore\, heritage\, wildlife and flora & fauna\, and is introducing four new graduates who will be exhibiting with the collective for the first time. \nEach artist has also created a piece of work drawing on their own relationship with St.Ives and what this area means to them. \n  \nParticipating in this exhibition are: \n  \nLily Hall \nMichelle Redmore \nRachel Rose \nGary Small \nSarah Williams \nJonathan Wills \nPlus new graduates – \nMegan Gant \nKatie Hatherly \nStevie Marie \nLucy Thorn

SUMMARY:'Common Ground' with Plymouth Society of Artists - Invited Show
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a collaborative approach that celebrates the bridge between the Plymouth Society of Artists\, its eightieth anniversary and the St Ives Society of Artists. \nCentral to this relationship is the painter Robert Borlase Smart. Smart was born in Kingsbridge\, Devon in 1881 and studied at the Plymouth School of Art from 1897–1900\, then at the Royal College of Art from 1900–01. He continued his studies with Julius Olsson following a move to St Ives in 1913. At the end of his service on the Western Front during the First World War he returned to St Ives where\, amongst others\, was a prime mover in the formation of the St Ives Society. He quickly established himself as a driving force with the group’s early fortunes. As Secretary and later President in the ‘30s and ‘40s his unbounded energy encouraged the coalescing of the multi-talented (and multi-opinionated) forces of the Society. One-man shows included the Penwith Gallery\, St Ives\, 1949 and 1981\, the City Art Gallery\, Plymouth\, 1950 and 1975\, and as recently as 2014 in the Society’s Crypt Gallery. Although a traditional painter himself\, Smart welcomed the modernists into the Society\, later to be established as the Crypt Group. \nConcurrent with his position as President of STISA he was made the Plymouth Society’s first Vice President\, continuing in that role until his death in 1947. In early 1944\, under the guidance and enthusiasm of Lewis Duckett\, Principal of the Plymouth School of Art\, a group of artists met to discuss the proposal of mounting an exhibition in the City Art Gallery that coming autumn. Their work was to be shown under the title of the Plymouth Society of Artists the purpose of which was to encourage and foster a professional and progressive outlook in the fine arts of painting\, sculpture and printmaking for the benefit of Plymouth and Plymothians. Membership was to be restricted to those living in the city\, or with strong ties to it. That aim\, in itself\, was simple but in the eight decades that have passed there have been many and varied interpretations given to it and\, equally varied\, the exhibits. There have been numerous changes that have taken place during this time; extended mobility is now commonplace and has allowed many more practitioners to be within easy striking distance of the city rather than be restricted to within its boundary. \nCOMMON GROUND \nIn addition to the exhibition of work from both societies the show will feature a small but significant dedication to Borlase Smart to include a work given by him to the maternal grandfather of PSA member Hilary Soper. Frederick Colley was a painter and picture restorer with an international standing who\, during 1924\, spent some time in St Ives. He was gifted the painting by Borlase Smart inscribed on the back “as an appreciation of valuable advice given to the artist”. \nLar Cann\, Chairman
