Ray Balkwill CV
Ray Balkwill SWAc, is a well-known West Country artist who paints landscapes, particularly marine, in watercolour, pastels, mixed media and oils. He is a strong advocate of painting en plein air and his main objective is to capture the mood and spirit of a place. Living as he does on the coast, it is little wonder that the wide-open spaces of sea, estuary and sky have been the mainspring of his art. Born in Exeter in 1948, he studied at Exeter College of Art, thereafter making a career in advertising as an Art Director. In 1990 demand for his work led him to become a professional painter. Since then he has held numerous solo exhibitions, as well as showing in group exhibitions including the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolour. He also runs painting courses and has also made an art instruction film Capturing Estuary Moods with APV Films. He is a regular contributor to ‘The Artist Magazine’ and is also author of five books; Watercolour Plus (David & Charles), Ray Balkwill’s Exe Estuary (Halsgrove) Learn to Paint Coastal Landscapes (Collins) and Painting Landscapes with Atmosphere (David & Charles). His latest book ‘A Picture of Devon’ (Halsgrove) includes many of Devon’s foremost landscape artists. His work also features in many other art books and magazines including International Artist. In 2006 he was elected an Academician in the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts and is also a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists.
