Jan Phethean has worked internationally in Europe, The Mediterranean and the USA as a painter and award winning architectural designer for over 35 years.
In the nineties she created the Clubhouse concept for Virgin Atlantic and designed International Airport Upper Class Lounges in the UK and the USA. A feature of her interiors were large scale murals which Phethean also designed and painted.
Phethean, who has Cornish roots, moved to Cornwall in 2002 to paint full time and lives in a remote cliff top hamlet on the south east coast of Cornwall. She exhibits regularly in Sussex, London, Exeter and Cornwall.
‘I am endlessly fascinated by those things unseen in our landscape and seascape which are nevertheless ‘felt’ and by the duality of the historical geology of a landscape, for example a high moor having once been beneath a sea .The secret life of the wild animals that live amongst us and the way that man has shaped the land through his tracks, farming and industry also play their part in my work. Each painting captures a moment in time, the land and the sea are never still, the currents continue to run beneath the stillest waters, and deep deep below the most tranquil landscape water runs through the centuries to the sea.
My paintings inhabit the world of the imagination and are painted with hidden secrets and a dreamlike quality to encourage deeper contemplation of what it means to live in this beautiful world and how very precious our planet is.
“As an alchemist strikes for gold, Phethean strives to express the intangible. Trusting her emotional instincts her work is both aesthetically beautiful and intensely courageous.” Londonart.
