Gareth Lye
Born in Wales 1972 Gareth Lye has been engaged in drawing, painting and making things all his life.
Encouraged by a highly practical and talented family, he was attracted from an early age to work which combined thoughtful approach with concise action.
His work is firmly grounded in the premise of accurate drawing, colour mixing and application. Continuously working in sketchbooks allows him to explore and develop ideas, with the dominant theme being ‘an ambiguous plane’. Two or more subject matters that share a common ground, represented by repetition and overlay.
Gareth’s paintings do not sit within any specific genre, but are deeply routed in a long visual tradition of a thoroughly controlled draughtsmanship based response to our experience. They allow for an unconditional concession to chance, but the elimination of all that is approximate or purely expressive.
